TechnologyOne Selects NetApp to Improve the Profitability and Efficiency of its SaaS Cloud Offering

Australia’s largest enterprise software company experiences significant savings and increased performance

NetApp today announced that TechnologyOne has implemented NetApp Private Storage (NPS) on a FlexPod data centre platform with MetroCluster to help reduce costs and increase performance for its global customers.

TechnologyOne is Australia's largest enterprise software company, with offices in six countries. Its software powers its diverse range of customers which include more than 1000 leading corporations, government departments, financial institutions, universities and statutory authorities around the world.

In 2011, TechnologyOne saw the future was in cloud-based solutions, and made the strategic investment to invest in moving its successful enterprise solution to a Software as a Service (SaaS) offering. By delivering its enterprise SaaS, customers would no longer have to worry about the complexity of running or updating their software and infrastructure, with TechnologyOne taking care of all of that for them.

As many of TechnologyOne’s customers have seasonal workloads, for example universities who have students registering for courses during the year, it needed a storage solution that could react in real-time. In addition, many of its customers are global with data being accessed worldwide, so it required a highly efficient solution for stored data.

“Data has really strong gravity and once it’s stored somewhere, it’s hard to move around,” said Iain Rouse, R&D Group Director of Cloud at TechnologyOne. “With a global cloud and customers around the world, we turned to NetApp to solve this problem as its Data Fabric approach enables our customers to interact with their data seamlessly.”

TechnologyOne also wanted to adopt a multi-cloud approach without increasing costs or complexity given its customers were beginning to demand alternate cloud solutions. For these reasons, TechnologyOne worked with NetApp to develop the “TechnologyOne MetroPod”, a combination of proven technologies including NetApp Private Storage for Cloud, FlexPod, and MetroCluster hosted within Equinix’s data centre. Cloud ONTAP and OnCommand Insight enable TechnologyOne’s multi-cloud approach and efficiencies in the cloud, whilst AltaVault helps to store the data in an object store, providing eleven nines resiliency. The solution is specific to TechnologyOne’s requirements, strategically designed and sized for optimum efficiency taking both capacity and performance into consideration.

“We are able to take our current 99.999% ‘resiliency’ from AWS to 99.999% of ‘availability’ using the MetroPod architecture,” said Rouse. “We anticipate seeing significant savings over the next few years as well as a significant reduction in our backup and recovery times.” Most importantly, TechnologyOne is now able to manage, move, protect and share data whenever needed through a data fabric.

“Hosted within Equinix, the MetroPod provides TechnologyOne customers with optimum flexibility, redundancy and scale as they explore alternate cloud solutions. By leveraging Equinix’s interconnection platform with direct access to multiple clouds customers have access to advanced hybrid architecture that can drive significant business outcomes,” said Jeremy Deutsch, Managing Director of Equinix Australia.

"With this implementation, NetApp has enabled TechnologyOne to meet the complex demands of its global clients with this highly efficient and affordable solution,” said Steve Manley, Vice President, NetApp ANZ. “This solution is specifically designed for TechnologyOne’s customers who require choice and control in a dynamic environment.”

Additional benefits TechnologyOne has experienced include an 85% reduction of production data with NetApp deduplication and FlexClone technology; improving the performance tenfold of AWS’s fastest storage tier with NPS for AWS; and the ability for its customers to prove sovereignty of data to Australian regulators. This also makes TechnologyOne future-ready by reducing the risk with NPS for Cloud, making it now able to support alternate cloud solutions.
